Travelling Art Scholarship
Jennie Thomas set up her Traveling Art Scholarship at the University of Newcastle to allow studying artists to experience art cultures outside their own.
Jennie says: "I remember sitting for a whole afternoon in The Louvre in Paris watching a young man ‘copy’ Leonardo da Vinci's famous painting of the Mona Lisa. This young art student was doing an art restoration course. Back then, in the late 1960s, in the middle of winter, there were no queues at The Louvre and no glass in front of that famous painting. I listened in awe as he talked to me about the nuances in the work. Since then, there have been many such possibilities for me to enjoy and learn about art representing a variety of cultures and forms of art practice in many mediums.
To enable emerging artists to have similar mind broadening experiences was one of the main reasons that I set up the JT Travelling Art Scholarships. Over the years, I’ve had the joy of seeing these young people grow and develop both in their art practice and in their personal confidence as a result of their travel experiences. As the seeds begin the flourish; I watch as the dreams grow and flower."
The J T Travelling Art Scholarship is awarded to students who have a clear vision of their art practice and a passion for what they do. It provides an opportunity for students to gain primary research and inspiration during their Honours year of study by funding Scholars to travel overseas. Many recipients have gone on to become well known artists and winners of other awards.
