Artist Statement

Alexia Sinclair is an award winning Australian Fine Art photographer and digital artist. Her distinct style is easily recognisable and highly original. Using a visual narrative to seduce her audience with each photographic feast, Alexia’s art is dark and seductive, baroque and symbolic. Her multilayered photographs subtly present contemporary notions of fashion and beauty through innovative digital media, whilst restoring antique notions of classicism, elegance and luxury.

More information about Alexia's work and commissions can be found on her website.

Homage, an app for the iPad, gives further insight into Alexia's intricate art works. This interactive book contains brilliant high resolution images that explore each artwork, the story depicted, the symbolism used and some insight into how the work was created.

Art Career Beginnings

My formal art training began at National Art School in Sydney from 1995 to 1998. I later completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Hons I) in 2004 and Master of Fine Arts in 2007 at the University of Newcastle.

In 2003, I was one of the very first recipients of the Jennie Thomas Travelling Art Scholarship. I was also awarded two postgraduate scholarships and was honoured in 2007 to be recognised by the University with its prestigious Newton John Award.

My Jennie Thomas Travelling Scholarship Experience

I've always felt that receiving the Jennie Thomas Travelling Art Scholarship was more of a psychological gift than a financial one. Although only several thousand dollars, it was a seed that began to grow into something much greater, through the love and encouragement that Jennie displayed. Although Jennie has experienced many great challenges in her own life, she's never allowed tragedy to stand in the way of living her life to the fullest. It's Jennie's positive attitude that encourages students to strive through some of their own greatest challenges and excel in what they do.

Beyond The Scholarship

Many of the architectural and landscape photographs I collected during my scholarship travels became the stage for my first large series, 'The Regal Twelve'. In this series, each artwork focuses on the narratives and settings of powerful women from history, whilst firmly grasping the strength and beauty of the modern woman. An obvious influence to the style of this work are the masters of renaissance art, yet this series explores contemporary techniques of image making and is presented as complex digital artworks.

My work now spans the divide between the worlds of Fine Art and Commercial Art. I've worked to translate my signature artistic style into highly polished campaigns for clients such as Harpers Bazaar, Marie Claire, Canon, Qantas, NZ Opera, Queensland Ballet and also for several private commissions.
